Cruise Liner Amsterdam Makes Aomori Port of Call
写真The Amsterdam (61,000t) came into Aomori Port on October 2, 2007. Upon its arrival, the children of Aoi Tori (Blue Bird) Preschool welcomed passengers with a Japanese taiko performance. Additionally, to ensure that passengers could feel at ease walking through town, APIC assigned volunteer translators throughout the central shopping area and provided rental electric wheelchairs. APIC saw many people shopping and conversing with local residents, and in this way the Amsterdam’s mooring fostered both internationalization and regional revitalization for Aomori. Upon embarkation, Aomori citizens performed Nebuta’s unique music and dance while many Aomori city residents waved penlights in prayer for the Amsterdam’s safe voyage.
Implementation of Welcome Events for Cruise Liners
写真Beginning with the Nippon Maru on May 4, 2007, a total of twelve ships—including the Clipper Odyssey, Pacific Venus, and Asuka II cruise ships—entered into Aomori port; around 3,500 passengers visited Aomori, and each time a welcome ceremony was held in our guests’ honor. Aomori’s welcome was received favorably among captains and passengers alike. They stated, “We are appreciative of Aomori’s warm welcome. We would like to come again next year, too.” Additionally, cruise captains returned the welcome by inviting Aomori residents onboard their vessels to share the splendor of cruise tours; in all, APIC conducted 4 onboard tours. Aomori residents were dazzled and amazed at the facilities, which they said rivaled luxury hotels, and voiced a desire to take a voyage by sea.。
Visiting Cruise Lines Abroad for Sales
写真From August 18-23, 2007, APIC participated in the Aomori Nebuta performance in Los Angeles, and was able to show some of Aomori’s charm through the festival. APIC also visited 2 cruise lines while in the U.S.A to conduct top sales. The group urged for them to call on Aomori Port and introduced its tourism resources and places of interest.
Fifth Time to Participate in the World’s Largest Cruise Convention
写真 As a part of the Visit Japan Campaign (VJC) project, APIC again participated in public relations for Japan at the 2006 Sea Trade, Cruise, & Shipping Convention, a convention held every March in Miami, Florida.
APIC, along with the VJC Bureau, and the other participating regional ports—Kobe, Nagasaki, Naha, and Osaka—shared a joint exhibit booth with Korea. APIC introduced Aomori’s folk arts and crafts to foreign cruise lines in order to promote Aomori’s attractiveness as a port of call.
