Michinoku Northern Fishing Boat Museum (5 min. by car from Aomori Pier)
写真 The “Mudahamagi” style fishing boat is one with a long history, used extensively in Aomori and Hokkaido. As it provides an important insight into ship development in Japan, it is designated as an Important Tangible Cultural Asset. 67 such “Mudahamagi” style boats are preserved here, with an additional 77 different wooden boats. At this museum, many various fishing tools and sailboats from around the world are displayed. 
Special Place of Historic Interest—Sannai-Maruyama (20 min. by car from Aomori Pier)
写真 This special place of historic interest is Japan’s largest of Jōmon village remains. Starting with the humongous six-pillared architectural structure, many earthenware remains have been found here. The remains and restructured areas are on display, while the earthenware can be found in the neighboring Jōmon museum.
Aomori Prefectural Art Museum (20 min. by car from Aomori Pier)
写真 Art museum adjacent to the Sannai-maruyama site. Among the works on display are three pieces of Marc Chagall’s “Aleko,” measuring 9m in height and 15m in width. Also exhibited are Munakata Shikō’s work, Nara Yoshitomo’s work, and Narita Tōru’s work. Many unique pieces of art are on display.
Munakata Shikō Memorial Museum (20 min. by car from Aomori Pier)
写真 Built as a tribute to Aomori-native Munakata’s 50 years of painting, the Munakata Shikō Memorial Museum houses and exhibits Munakata Shikō’s woodblock print masterpieces “Shaka Jūdai Deshi” and “Yamato-shi Utsukushi” among others—including Yamato-e (classical Japan decorative paintings), oil paintings, and written manuscripts. It is in the center of the city and was built in a pseudo-Azekura style, an ancient log cabin type of architecture, to harmonize with the surrounding Japanese gardens and show a composed appearance.
Asamushi Aquarium (35 min. by car from Aomori Pier, 23 min. by train from Aomori station)
写真 Experience being completely submerged in the ocean as you walk through an tunnel right through the aquarium’s largest water tank. You can also enjoy an adorable dolphin show.
Kōyasan Aomori Branch Zenbutsu-san Seiryūji (Shōwa Buddha) (30 min. by car from Aomori Pier)
写真 At a height of 21.35 meters and a weight of 220 tons, the largest bronze statue of the Amida Buddha, made in 1984, is housed here. Japan’s 4th largest pagoda, built here in 1996, is constructed from Aomori’s native cypress
Aomori Nature Park “Nebuta no Sato” (25 min. by car from Aomori Pier)
写真 In a compound of over 13,000m² of nature, “Nebuta no Sato” permanently displays 8 large lantern floats from Aomori Nebuta and 1 float from Hirosaki Neputa. The floats are fantastic when lit, and they floats are paraded around almost daily. Here you can actually pull the Nebuta, dance with the Haneto dancers, and experience the vibrance and grandiosity of Nebuta.
Road-side Station Namioka: Apple Hill (40 min. by car from Aomori Pier)
With an apple orchard next door, visitors can enjoy “apple picking” during the fall harvest. This station is frequented by tourists because of its direct-sale fresh produce stands, restaurants serving only dishes with locally grown goods, and an indigo dying center experience.
Former Tsubota Family Residence (Aomori city medeival mansion property) (40 min. from Aomori Pier)
写真 A reconstruction of a wealthy farmer’s mansion from the late Edo period, originally built in Kareizawa in Namioka town. In addition to the spacious earthen floors and living quarters, the mezzanine floor has a peculiar and rare layout, and it is said that this house served many travelers as a mountain pass teahouse.
Hakkōda Ropeway (50 min. by car from Aomori Pier)
写真 Aomori’s Hakkōda Peak is famous for the abundance of bog and alpine flora. The ropeway connects the piedmont station to the 1,324m Yachidake peak station in just 10 minutes. From Yachidake station, visitors gain a panorama of not only the magnificent nature surrounding the station, but also the whole of Aomori city, Mutsu Bay, and the Tsugaru Peninsula.
Sukayu (60 min. by car from Aomori Pier)
写真 Designated as National Hot Spring No. 1 in 1954, Sukayu boasts the 4th numerous amount of hot springs in Japan, and is the sumo-sized grand champion of Aomori’s hot springs. Sukayu’s famous Sennin Yokujō (One-Thousand Person Bath) measures in at other 260m² and is made from Aomori premium Japanese cypress. This bath is also known for its mixed bathing; male and female, young and old come to enjoy the healing properties of its water.
